Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.

International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
