Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters
New research indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using such medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
